Take Quality product photos from home

Selling goods and services online starts with quality photos. In this era of social distancing that can be a lofty request when professional photographers are unable to enter your living room. To solve that problem, Saray Taylor-Roman has outlined tricks and tips on how to make studio quality photos at home – and on a budget!

Setting up for great light

Light is THE most important aspect of any photo.

1. Use North or South natural light

It provides the most consistent and even rays.

2. Diffuse the light

This can be done with a white trash bag taped flat over the window.

3. Create a reflector

Use a simple poster board or white project board to reflect the light onto your subject.

4. Move the object close to the light source

On a non-distracting table or surface.

5. Take LOTS of angles and shots

It’s easier to delete the bad ones than try to recreate the setup!

High-end photos

For high-end looking photos, you can add these steps:

1. Buy an acrylic sheet from Lowes or Home Depot, and paint it with white high gloss spray paint on one side.

2. Curve the acrylic sheet and photograph the object to create a seamless background.

The shine and curve eliminates the background line and elevates the overall look of the photo.

Editing

You can edit with your smartphone photo options or utilize a free app like Lightroom or Snapseed. These can offer quick finishing options for your photos.

Key takeaway:

Remember, it’s all about the light to capture the essence and feeling of an object. Customers won’t buy what they can’t see!
