When people ask me what kind of artist I am, because I’m a writer, musician, muralist, oil and mixed media painter, clay artist and teacher, I tell people, “I’m a colourist.” It’s a blanket statement meant to put a simple label on the complex nature of who I am innately: an artist that creates from compulsion rather than discipline. There is a heavy focus on color on most all of my fine art works. I feel like my writing and music is where I reconcile my struggles and triumphs whereas painting and pottery is where I create the things I wish to see or manifest. I suppose I could say I walk with one hand in the light and one hand in the dark, hoping to not get lost in either. The photo I chose for this submission reflects my growing journey in colour, and my love for creating and appreciating functional art.
