Printshop Beer – and a print – at the next Maker Meetup
Printshop Beer Co. just celebrated its first anniversary but the brewery – site of the next Maker Meetup on Thursday, June 20 – had its beginnings years earlier at Bearden Beer Market.
That’s where Printshop’s now-owners – Peter Riesing, Jim and Jennifer Civis, Joshua Baines and Adam Luttrell – came up with the idea for the brewery. All craft beer lovers, they knew there weren’t a lot of local breweries at the time and they made a plan to open their own.
They found their building, formerly a lithograph printing company, on Island Home Avenue in South Knoxville. Hence, they named the brewery Printshop Beer. Coincidentally, Peter is a UT grad with a printmaking major.
The space took a lot of renovation work, the bulk of which they did themselves. Then Peter and Jim signed on as the brewers and fulltime employees.
The brewery generally has 15 beers on tap, as well as a cider for its gluten free customers. This week, in time for the Maker Meetup, they’re serving three special sour beers – or German goses – two of which are flavored with fruit. A food truck will offer something to eat outside.
Printshop has a large open space which they use for gatherings of the SlowKno Running Club, First Friday art shows, craft workshops and other community events. At the meetup Thursday, Drew Justice of BeercraftTN will help makers who bring a T-shirt screen print South Knoxville or Printshop Beer logos on them.
But the great beer and food, the T-shirt and Thomas Zachary’s art on exhibit aren’t the only reasons to drop in at Thursday’s meetup, which starts at 6 p.m. It’s the makers you’ll meet, the ideas you’ll share, the help you’ll find – or offer – that add real value to Maker Meetups.
If you haven’t signed up yet to attend, save your spot today! See you Thursday!
