Soil and Steel

Steel products such as chandeliers, railings, sculpture, etc.

I started my business in 2010 focusing on metalwork and gardening. While I still do some garden work, my business has mainly shifted towards metal art. Aside from sculpture, I have made railings, chandeliers, beds, archways, gates, firescreens, and more. I enjoy designing work for a specific location, and tend to lean towards art deco, art nouveau, arts & crafts / craftsman style. Though I work with with a hard, heavy, and dirty medium, my aim is to soften and shape it into something beautiful that will add to a persons everyday life.

Handbags and paintings

My hand-printed bags are structured layers and patterns that were created to be carried around downtown for weekend strolls, but set a distinctive statement in the office that is fresh and unique. Growing up and living in the Appalachian, Blue Ridge valley and inspired by Japanese culture, my designs are simple, fluid, and mindful.

Lettering, Illustration, and Graphic Design

Hi! I’m Rachel McDonald, the artist behind Rachel Writes Fancy. I'm a lettering artist and graphic designer who loves creating brand identities, print collateral, and artwork for businesses passionate about giving their customers a beautiful experience. For as long as I can remember, I have loved letterforms — and how the style of the letters speak as much as the words they depict. Now I’m bringing that love of lettering and design know-how to help you create beautiful and authentic experiences for your customers. Whether you’re starting from scratch or revamping an existing brand, I can work with you to create your bespoke visual identity system and apply it beautifully across your collateral. If you want to go the extra mile, I can work with you to create those special touches from t-shirts and tote bags to chalkboard menus and murals

Art

Howdy! My name is Kristen and I like to make things. I am currently making peaceful acrylic paintings, pointed mixed media pieces, and quirky technicolor watercolor illustrations. These three styles come tumbling out depending on my mood which usually can be summed up by: let’s chill out and debate in acrylics, resist! we gotta do something about politics in mixed media, and let’s have fun and be weird together in watercolors. Ever feel like this? Then you’re in good company - Enjoy!

Textured Paintings

What excites me most about what I make is that I'm on a path of discovery and exploration of paint as subject, object, material, and texture.

The paintings have great depth, their surfaces have 100s of layers of paint. It wasn't until I carved my first gouge that I was hooked. I was able to reveal the history of the painting and what was locked within. The piece had innocence and potential to be something heroic, and full of information and wonder. My love for exploring paint as object is still fueled by that single gouge, however I manipulate the pieces surface with new tools and applications.

I have two bodies of work; my carvings which for the most apart are my abstracts, with an occasional landscape here and there and my assemblages which are my mermaids, girls with flowers, and animals. My assemblages are made primarily of paint, I reuse the excess that has been carved away from my abstract paintings to create more textures that invites you to play and interact physically and emotionally with the pieces.

I love to play with color, line and texture. In my current work I am exploring paint as texture. It really is something you have to see, touch and experience. I invite you to come enjoy this new body of work, there is something for everyone.

FOLK

Woven and textile art and oil paintings

While traveling in Morocco I was inspired by its ancient textile traditions. I learned to sew while there and have since taught myself to weave on a variety of looms, some custom made. My works are sold as wall hangings, blankets, rugs, or made-to-order commissions. All are composed of natural fibers. On my site I also sell handmade Moroccan goods including textile, leather, and ceramics sourced from responsible organizations.

Hand forged Knives and Tools for Kitchen and Camp

I make hand forged knives and tools for the kitchen and camp from reclaimed antique tool steels salvaged from this region. Using 100 year old sawmill blades, plows, springs, files and rasps, I meticulously forge heirloom quality knives from scratch and finish with the finest quality woods and stones. Using ancient techniques I make my own damascus steel and mokume-gane to make each piece I create a collectable masterpiece.

Functional, sculptural and wearable glass and clay

I see the world in components, little pieces fit together to make the whole. My work is much the same. I create components and then mix and match those components into functional, sculptural or wearable works.

Chaser And Burk Custom Furniture

Mid Century Modern Custom Furniture and Home Goods

My passion for woodworking was realized when I made a simple shelf for my wife in 2013. Soon after I began obsessively learning everything I could woodworking and furniture design. I got a job at a small commercial furniture shop that made rustic style furniture as I began to build my own business on the side. I grew more and more fascinated with Mid Century Modern design and 2 years later I finally took the plunge and quit that job to start my own business. Since then I have developed deep relationships with my clients as we worked closely together to design and build furniture that met their practical needs and gave their house a touch of comfort and beauty.

I use the highest quality locally sourced hardwoods and time tested building techniques to provide my clients with heirloom quality furniture and home furnishings that they can cherish for a lifetime. I believe in taking the time to make things the right way, even if it's not the easiest, and I stand behind the products that I make.

Satisfaction guaranteed, every time.

Wingshuck Corn Shuck Dolls + Annie Egypt Herbals

WingShuck sm - Anne Freels.jpg

Hand made contemporary and traditional Appalachian corn shuck dolls + all-natural herbal soaps and skin care products

I am a full-time, self-employed craft artist who has been making corn shuck dolls since 1975. I am devoted to the creative process of craft, and especially the alchemy of transforming raw, natural materials into new forms. I dye the natural dried corn shucks by hand, then roll and tie them into doll figures. I embellish the dolls with a variety of natural materials, and repurposed objects. My dolls represent imaginative notions of folklore, legend, myth, healing modalities, shamanism and other earthly and celestial entities, as well as traditional Appalachian themes. I am also devoted to keeping corn shuck doll craft alive, and teach workshops and classes at schools, craft centers and at my studio. I am the author of "Making Colorful Corn Shuck Dolls,” a full-color, step-by-step instructional book on making corn shuck dolls, published in 2011. You can find my work at various craft galleries and shops in the southern Appalachian region.

In addition to my corn shuck artistry, I also produce my own line of natural skin care products under the name Annie Egypt Herbals. I began by experimenting with making my own soaps over 20 years ago, after becoming conscious of harmful synthetic ingredients in commercially produced skin care. In addition to my herbal soaps, I formulate face and body creams, anointing and massage oils, and other products good for the body and soul. All of my products are made in small batches using all-natural vegetable oils and pure essential oils. My products “Won’t make you beautiful; they will keep you beautiful!”™
